【2026】Xitou Day Trip Guide | Transportation, Attractions & Itinerary All in One

Can you do Xitou as a day trip? Yes, but you need to plan well.
Xitou is located in the mountains of Lugu Township, Nantou — getting there from any city requires a decent drive. If you don't sort out transportation and plan your itinerary, you might spend half the day just "getting there." But with proper preparation, you can absolutely hit Xitou's essential attractions, enjoy local food, and take great photos — all in one day.
Xitou Nature Education Area is a forest park run by NTU's Experimental Forest, and the most iconic in Taiwan. Its landmark, the Xitou Sacred Tree, is a giant red cypress that the park's official site describes as having stood firm for more than a thousand years; it fell on 11 September 2016, and a Sacred Tree viewing platform now stands at the site. Tourism Administration figures put domestic travel in 2025 at 247.61 million trips (2025 Survey of Travel by R.O.C. Citizens, 2026), with Nantou consistently among central Taiwan's most popular destinations. Agoda's 2025 travel trends survey shows 34% of travelers plan family trips — Xitou is well suited to a family forest bath. This guide covers transportation options, recommended itineraries, and must-visit attractions all in one place. Whether you're coming from Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung — read this and you're ready to go.

One day isn't enough for Xitou? Great-value accommodation packages at the end to upgrade to a 2-day-1-night trip
TL;DR: The most convenient transportation for a Xitou day trip is the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line (about 1.5 hours from Taichung). The classic itinerary: University Pond → Sacred Tree Trail → Sky Walk → Monster Village. For kids, take the easier Monster Village → Ginkgo Trail route. Park admission rose on 1 January 2026 to NT$250 for adults (NT$200 concession, NT$130 half-price, NT$40 special rate, free under 6). The park opens at 7 AM and stops admitting visitors after 5 PM.

What to Know Before Your Xitou Day Trip
Best Season and Weather Tips
Xitou is worth visiting year-round, but experiences vary significantly by season.
Spring and autumn (March-May, September-November) are most comfortable. Temperatures are neither too hot nor cold, trail walks won't leave you drenched in sweat, and afternoon thunderstorms are less likely. This is the most recommended time to visit.
Summer is a great escape from the heat — the park's official site records Xitou's annual mean temperature as 16.6°C, with monthly means of roughly 11.0-20.8°C. But afternoon thunderstorms are common, so schedule outdoor activities for the morning.
Winter is damp and cold — bring warm clothing. But fewer tourists and cheaper accommodation offer a different kind of serene beauty.
During plum rain season (May-June) and typhoon season (July-September), watch mountain road conditions. Check Nantou highway real-time conditions before departing to avoid discovering road closures after arriving.

- Concession NT$200 — students aged 12+ with student ID, groups of 30 or more, NTU alumni
- Half price NT$130 — children aged 6 to under 12, residents registered in Nantou County (with ID)
- Special rate NT$40 — seniors 65+ with ID, approved school groups from Xinyi and Shuili townships, volunteers with an honour card

We recommend arriving early. Between 7:00-8:00 AM has the fewest people and freshest air — the most comfortable time for trail walks. Finishing the park early leaves the afternoon free for Monster Village shopping and eating.
How to Get to Xitou from Different Cities? Complete Transportation Guide
Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line | Most Convenient Public Transit
For getting to Xitou without a car, the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line is the best option. Departing from Taichung Gancheng Station or Taichung HSR Station, the ride takes about 1.5-2 hours directly to Xitou.
Departures are not evenly spread through the day. Buses from Taichung to Xitou cluster in the morning — the first is around 06:40 and they run every 10-30 minutes until about 10:10, then thin out to roughly hourly, with the last outbound around 15:00. Return buses start about 08:30 and the last one leaves around 17:20 (Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line timetable). Arrive in Taichung in the afternoon and there may be no bus up the mountain left — this is the single easiest way to derail a day trip.
EasyCard or iPASS accepted for payment. You can also buy package tickets (including admission) on the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle website for better value.
We've actually taken the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line — the overall experience is good. The bus is reasonably comfortable, and drivers handle the mountain roads steadily. The only note: weekend buses can get crowded, so arrive at the station early to queue.
From Taipei: Intercity Bus + Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Transfer
No direct service from Taipei to Xitou. The fastest route:
- Take HSR to Taichung (about 50 minutes)
- Transfer to Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line (about 1.5 hours)
- Total about 3 hours
Another option is taking an intercity bus to Taichung then transferring to the Tourist Shuttle — cheaper but more time-consuming. HSR early bird tickets go as low as 35% off (65% of the regular fare) — buying early saves on transportation.
Honestly, a day trip from Taipei is a bit tight. Transportation alone is 6 hours round trip. If possible, seriously consider upgrading to a 2-day-1-night trip for a more enjoyable experience.
From Taichung: Drive or Taiwan Tourist Shuttle — Fastest
Driving from Taichung via National Freeway 3, exiting at the Zhushan Interchange onto Route 151 (the route the park's official site recommends), is the fastest option.
Weekend mountain roads tend to get congested. Depart before 7 AM to avoid traffic. Weekend parking fills up quickly too — parking outside the park is easier to find.
If you'd rather not drive mountain roads, the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line is a relaxed alternative. Let someone else drive while you enjoy the scenery.
From Kaohsiung/Tainan: HSR + Transfer Strategy
From Kaohsiung or Tainan, take HSR to Taichung (40-50 minutes) then transfer to the Tourist Shuttle — total about 3-3.5 hours.
For drivers heading north from southern Taiwan, the park's official site recommends exiting at the Nanyun Interchange onto Provincial Highway 3, then turning onto Route 151. But mountain roads are challenging — if you're unfamiliar, public transit is safer.
Tour Bus Day Trip Packages
Don't want to plan your own itinerary? Travel agencies offer ready-made Xitou day trip group packages.
Including charter bus, guide, and lunch, prices depend on each travel agency's itinerary. Suitable for those who don't want to drive or plan — especially great for senior groups and corporate team outings.
The downside is also obvious: fixed itinerary, low flexibility, usually only 3-4 stops with limited time at each. Those wanting an in-depth visit are better off going independently.
How to Plan the Smoothest Xitou Day Trip Itinerary?
Classic Route: University Pond → Sacred Tree Trail → Sky Walk
The most popular classic route and our most recommended from personal experience. Covers Xitou's three must-see attractions, with about 3-4 hours of walking.
- 08:00 Enter the park, head to University Pond trail first. The bamboo arch bridge is Xitou's most iconic photo spot (the park announced on August 30, 2026 that the bamboo bridge renewal work is expected to finish in mid-October 2026; keep away from the work area during construction) — fewer people and better lighting in the morning
- 09:30 Sacred Tree Trail. Tall cedars and cypresses along the way — walking through the forest is incredibly healing. Although Xitou's sacred tree main trunk fell in 2016, the trail itself is well worth walking
- 11:00 Sky Walk. About 220 m long, rising 22.6 m above the ground at its highest point — the park's official site likens it to seven storeys. Seeing the forest from canopy level is a unique experience. It runs 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, opening an hour later than the park itself. It's a bit high, so those afraid of heights should prepare mentally
- 12:00 Return to the park entrance for lunch, or exit to eat at Monster Village
Family Route: Monster Village → Ginkgo Trail → University Pond
A relaxed route designed specifically for families with kids. Short walking distance, flat paths, stroller-friendly.
- 09:00 Start at Monster Village. Japanese-style buildings with cute monster mascot figures — kids love it. Browse and snack along the way
- 10:30 Enter the park for the Ginkgo Trail. Easy and flat — especially beautiful in autumn when ginkgo leaves turn golden
- 12:00 Lunch (Monster Village or park restaurant)
- 13:30 Easy park stroll — just walk to University Pond for photos
This route suits 3-6 year olds. Not too tiring and very fun.
In-Depth Route: Wangyu Forest → Shanlinxi → Xitou Park
For fit travelers wanting an in-depth exploration. Requires driving or chartered car.
- 07:00 Early departure to Wangyu Forest. Most beautiful with morning mist. There's a steep uphill stretch from the trailhead to Wangyu Forest (or take a local shuttle) — non-slip shoes are essential
- 09:30 Head to Shanlinxi Park. Waterfalls, flowers, trails all worth seeing. At least 2-3 hours needed
- 13:00 After lunch, head to Xitou park. Choose one or two main trails
- 16:00 Return trip
This route is a tight squeeze for one day. If possible, staying a night makes it much more relaxed.
Top 8 Must-Visit Xitou Attractions
Xitou Nature Education Area
Xitou's core attraction: a forest park managed by the Experimental Forest of National Taiwan University's College of Bioresources and Agriculture (Xitou Nature Education Area official site, 2026), with a well-developed trail system.
Main trails include University Pond Trail, Sacred Tree Trail, Sky Walk, and more. Rich ecology within the park — with luck, you might spot squirrels and Swinhoe's pheasants. The quietness and fresh air of walking through the forest is the recharge urban people need most.
Monster Village Songlin Town
Xitou's most popular check-in spot. Japanese-style themed commercial area with various monster-themed decorations and merchandise — kids get very excited.
According to the official site of its operator, Mingshan Resort (明山森林會舘), the village sells specialty items such as Stinging Nettle Bread, Stinging Nettle pastries and Xitou cakes.
Wangyu Forest
A dammed lake formed by an earthquake — dead trees standing in water, dubbed "Taiwan's Jiuzhaigou."
Most beautiful at dawn and after rain with mist, though trail conditions are also worse then. Physical fitness is needed — it's a steep uphill stretch from the trailhead, though you can also take a local shuttle (fares as posted on site).
University Pond
Xitou's most classic photo spot. The arch bridge built of moso bamboo reflected in clear water — every Xitou visitor takes this photo (the bamboo bridge renewal work is expected to finish in mid-October 2026).
Xitou Sacred Tree
A red cypress representative of Taiwan's mid-elevation cloud forest belt, which the park's official site describes as having stood firm for more than a thousand years. It fell on 11 September 2016 owing to old age and weather; a Sacred Tree viewing platform now stands at the site, and the huge fallen trunk is still an arresting sight. Well-developed trails surrounding it, flanked by tall cedars. Walking the sacred tree trail is worthwhile in itself.
Ginkgo Forest
Located in Lugu's ginkgo area — spectacular when ginkgo leaves turn golden in autumn. Not inside the Xitou park — requires driving separately.
Shanlinxi Forest Ecological Resort
About 17 km from Xitou along the Shanlinxi Highway (County Road Tou-95). Different flowers each season: spring peonies, summer hydrangeas, autumn maple leaves, winter tulips. Songlong Waterfall is the spectacular signature attraction.
Neihu Elementary School (Taiwan's Most Beautiful Forest School)
The school buildings are rare wooden structures set amid tall trees — incredibly therapeutic visuals. Check the school's visiting rules before you go, and don't disturb classes during school hours. Very close to the Xitou park — plan 20-30 minutes for a photo stop.

What's Good to Eat Near Xitou?
In-Park Dining Options
Inside the park there's Howard Hotel's restaurant and several snack shops offering set meals, lunch boxes, and small hot pots. Prices are slightly higher than outside, but conveniently located.
We recommend bringing snacks and water — you can refuel during trail walks. The park is huge, and discovering you're hungry halfway through with the restaurant still far away is no fun.
Lugu Snacks and Tea Restaurants
Lugu is the home of Dong Ding Oolong Tea. Many roadside tea shops offer tastings and purchases, some with free samples.
Bamboo shoots and bamboo tube rice are Lugu's signature dishes — rice steamed in fresh bamboo has a special fragrance completely different from what you'd find in the lowlands. Around Monster Village there are also plenty of snack shops and restaurants with more choices than inside the park.

Xitou Day Trip FAQ
Q: How do I take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle for a Xitou day trip?
A: Take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle "Xitou Line" from Taichung Gancheng Station or Taichung HSR Station — about 1.5-2 hours directly to Xitou. Morning departures are frequent (first around 06:40, every 10-30 minutes until about 10:00), thinning to roughly hourly afterwards, with the last outbound around 15:00; the last return leaves around 17:20. EasyCard accepted. Take an early bus (around 8:00 AM). Package tickets including admission are available on the website.
Q: How to plan a day trip from Taipei to Xitou?
A: The fastest way is the earliest HSR to Taichung (about 50 minutes), then transfer to the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Xitou Line (about 1.5 hours) — total about 3 hours. Catch the 4:00-5:00 PM Tourist Shuttle back to Taichung for HSR home. But 6 hours of round-trip transportation alone makes staying a night worth serious consideration.
Q: What attractions are recommended for a Xitou day trip?
A: The four must-visits are University Pond, Sacred Tree Trail, Sky Walk, and Monster Village. With extra time, add Ginkgo Trail and Neihu Elementary School. For kids, the easier Monster Village + Ginkgo Trail route is recommended.
Q: Are there travel agency group tour options for Xitou day trips?
A: Yes. Multiple travel agencies offer Xitou day trip packages including charter bus, guide, and lunch; prices depend on each travel agency's itinerary. Suitable for senior groups or corporate trips. The downside is fixed itinerary and low flexibility — those wanting in-depth visits should go independently.
