【2026】Taiwan Domestic Travel Subsidy: Live Since Sept 1 — Amounts, How to Register, Eligible Hotels
The domestic travel subsidy is real now. It opened on 1 September 2026, so it is no longer something "being planned" — weekday stays are discounted by up to NT$2,000 in general areas and up to NT$2,500 on the outlying islands, and a birthday credit adds another NT$1,200 if your number comes up.
The rules, though, are finer than they look: what counts as a "weekday", which long weekends are excluded, whether both nights have to be at the same hotel, and whether a room booked through an online platform still qualifies. This article works through the official announcement point by point, so you can tell whether you are able to use it and how.
TL;DR: The 2026 domestic travel subsidy (the Tourism Twin-Engine Programme) went live on 1 September, with a total budget of NT$3.33 billion. How Much Is the 2026 Domestic Travel Subsidy? The Five Programmes
The 2026 subsidy sits inside the Tourism Administration's "Tourism Twin-Engine Programme", with a total budget of about NT$3.33 billion. It passed its third reading in the Legislative Yuan on 14 August 2026 and started rolling out from 1 September (CNA, 2026). The programme contains nine measures in all; the five below are the "weekday domestic travel offers" that apply directly to ordinary travellers.

Weekday Accommodation Subsidy: Up to NT$2,000 in General Areas, NT$2,500 on the Islands
This is the one most people will actually use. It is open to ROC nationals travelling as individual travellers; group tours are not eligible.

A few details that are easy to get wrong:
- Two nights per person at most. The discount is counted per room per night, and each room can use it only once a night.
- The two nights do not have to be at one hotel — they can even be in different parts of the country. The only condition is that the check-in dates are consecutive.
- If you do not stay that second night back to back, the second-night amount counts as voluntarily given up; you cannot save it for another trip.
- The programme runs to 30 November 2026, but the Tourism Administration may announce an early close once the funds are exhausted (in principle it gives notice around two weeks beforehand).
Which Days Count as "Weekdays"? These Four Long Weekends Are Out
The official definition of a weekday is Sunday to Thursday, excluding national holidays and their long weekends. The Tourism Administration has also listed four excluded periods outright:

In other words, to use it in full you want dates that are Sunday to Thursday and outside those four blocks. Wednesday plus Thursday is the simplest two-night combination.
Birthday Credit: 1,000 Winners a Month, NT$1,200 Each
The birthday credit is a lottery. Each month 1,000 people whose birthday falls in that month are drawn, and each winner receives a NT$1,200 accommodation credit that can be combined with the weekday accommodation subsidy.
- Registration closes at 5pm on 8 September 2026
- Results can be checked from 11am on 9 September
- Winners can use the credit on weekday stays between 10 September and 31 December 2026
- One use per person, and one credit per room
Add the two together and the maximum is NT$3,200 per person in general areas (2,000 + 1,200) and NT$3,700 on the outlying islands (2,500 + 1,200).
Who Is Eligible?
- ROC nationals: holding a national ID card or NHI card, travelling as an individual traveller
- Group tours: not eligible
- Foreign visitors: not eligible for the weekday accommodation subsidy. The same programme does include four separate measures aimed at international travellers, with different rules — see the note below
- Family trips: each ID number can take part once; but remember the discount is counted per room per night, so if two people share a room, that room still gets only one weekday accommodation discount and one birthday credit for that night (they do not have to belong to the same person, but everyone using an entitlement has to actually stay)
If you hold a foreign passport, read this before you book. The weekday accommodation subsidy and the birthday credit are limited to ROC nationals travelling as individual travellers (FIT), and eligibility is confirmed by a national ID card or NHI card at check-in. Foreign visitors cannot claim the weekday accommodation subsidy, so do not book a stay expecting the discount to come off at the front desk. The same Tourism Twin-Engine Programme does contain a separate group of four measures under "strengthening international tourism momentum": a repeat-visit bonus for international travellers, a bonus for international travellers adding leisure travel to a MICE trip, an incentive-travel bonus for international travellers, and a support programme for international benchmark concerts. Those have their own eligibility conditions and their own rules, which are not the ones described in this article.
How to Apply for the Domestic Travel Subsidy
The shape of the process is register online first, then be verified in person at check-in.
Step 1: Complete Registration on the Official System
Go to the activity registration page of the Tourism Administration's domestic travel subsidy system and fill in your personal details, with your national ID card or NHI card to hand.
Registration opened at 11am on 20 August 2026, with the first five days split by the last digit of the ID number (0 and 1 on 8/20, 2 and 3 on 8/21, and so on). Since 25 August it has been open to everyone, so you can go straight in and register now.
Step 2: Book a Weekday Stay at a Participating Property
Finishing registration does not get you a room. You still have to book a legally registered property that has joined the programme, with a check-in date that falls on a weekday (see the definition and the excluded long weekends above).
Step 3: Show Your ID Card or NHI Card on the Day You Check In
This is the most important step, and the one most often misunderstood. The Tourism Administration says it plainly: completing your registration only puts you on file and does not guarantee that you will receive a discount. You still have to show either your national ID card or your NHI card when you actually check in, so the property can confirm that you are the person staying, before the accommodation subsidy is applied (CNA, 2026).
Which means the discount is taken off your bill by the property at check-in — it is not paid into your bank account afterwards.
In one line: registering is not the same as being guaranteed a subsidy. What decides it is whether you booked a participating property for that night, and whether you were there in person to be checked.

How Many Times Can You Use It? Can Family Use It?
- Each ID number can take part in the weekday accommodation subsidy once and the birthday credit once
- Name-verified and non-transferable: the traveller using the entitlement has to actually stay
- One of each per room per night: if two eligible people share a room, that room still only gets one weekday accommodation discount and one birthday credit for that night
Can You Use the Subsidy on a Booking Platform?
The answer here is different from previous years: partly yes.
The Tourism Administration has approved nine booking platforms, and booking a participating property through any of them qualifies:

There are two caveats to read before booking, though:
- Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com and other international booking platforms are not on the approved list.
- Individual properties may set stricter conditions of their own. On the official participating-operator page, a good number of properties are marked "phone bookings only (OTA bookings not accepted)" or "bookings via the major platforms not accepted" — what that property states is what counts.
The safest route is still to book direct with the property, on its own website or by phone, and to ask outright when booking whether that room type can use the weekday accommodation subsidy.
One more thing: the Tourism Administration has explicitly ruled that accommodation vouchers and similar prepaid gift certificates do not qualify for the weekday accommodation subsidy. If you already hold a voucher, that is a different way of saving (see the end of this article) and cannot be stacked on top of the subsidy.

Which Hotels Accept the Domestic Travel Subsidy?
Not every hotel takes it — the stay has to be at a legally registered property that has joined the programme.
How to Look Up Participating Properties
On the official system's participating operators and offers page you can filter by city or county, district, type (hotel or B&B) and property name, and the results link straight through to each property's own website.
The same page lists the extra offers each operator is adding on top, along with any restrictions on how you have to book (some state phone bookings only). Checking there before you book is a great deal less trouble than finding out at the front desk.
Participating Properties Can Be Found All Over Taiwan
From the hot spring hotels of Jiaoxi in Yilan, to Guguan in Taichung and the area around Sun Moon Lake in Nantou, and on to Hualien, Taitung and downtown Kaohsiung, every county and city has properties taking part. Because the list changes as operators join, look it up on the official page at the moment you book rather than relying on any unofficial compilation.
Is the "NT$0 Stay" Real?
In theory, yes — when the room rate is at or below the amount you can claim, the bill can come close to zero: two consecutive nights are worth up to NT$2,000 in general areas and NT$2,500 on the outlying islands. In practice you need a weekday, a low enough rate, a property that has joined the programme and availability, all at the same time, which is demanding and mostly lands on cheaper properties.
Rather than chasing an NT$0 stay, using the subsidy to stay one level better than usual on a weekday is generally the more realistic play.

How to Get More Out of the Weekday Travel Subsidy
The Double Advantage of Travelling Midweek
The weekday accommodation subsidy can only be used on weekdays in the first place, and hotel weekday rates are already lower than weekend ones. Put the two together and what you actually save over two consecutive weekday nights comes out higher than the headline subsidy figure suggests.
In practice, you can plan it like this:
- Pick Sunday to Thursday, avoiding the four excluded long weekends (Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, Taiwan Retrocession Day, Constitution Day)
- Stay two nights back to back, which is the only way to reach the larger second-night amount (NT$1,200 in general areas, NT$1,500 on the islands)
- The two nights can be at different properties, so a cross-county itinerary does not cost you the discount as long as the dates are consecutive
- If it is your birthday month, register for the birthday credit too — another NT$1,200 if you are drawn
