How to Choose Taiwan Family Travel Destinations? Picking by Region Is Smartest

Based on our experience visiting over 20 family attractions across Taiwan, the most important factor isn't "what's most popular" but "how far from home" and "is it age-appropriate for your kids."

Overview table:

RegionFeaturesDrive Time (from Taipei)Recommended DaysBest Months
NorthConvenient transport, urban attractions0-1.5 hoursHalf day-1 dayYear-round
CentralRich nature, mild climate2-3 hours1-2 daysYear-round
SouthPlenty of sun, beach fun3-4 hours2-3 daysOct-May
EastMagnificent nature, slow pace1-4 hours2-3 daysMar-Nov

For 0-3 year old infants/toddlers, we suggest short-drive northern or Yilan destinations. Ages 4+ can venture farther.

Northern Taiwan: Recommended Family Attractions

Northern Taiwan's biggest advantage is convenience. Many places allow same-day round trips, perfect for weekend getaways.

Taoyuan Xpark Aquarium + Hotel Cozzi Taoyuan

Xpark is one of northern Taiwan's hottest family attractions. The ocean tunnel amazes kids, and the penguin zone is every child's favorite.

Hotel Cozzi Taoyuan is right next to Xpark — its official site lists the distance as about 300 m, about 1 minute — the perfect lazy family travel combo. After staying there ourselves, we discovered the hotel's ground-floor Qiaohu Dream Park (five play zones) and the 100-ping Cabin Zone on the third floor are more fun than expected; kids can play all day in the hotel alone.

A reminder though: weekend crowds are massive. If possible, go on weekdays for a much better experience.

Tamsui Day Trip with Kids

Take the MRT and you're there — no driving needed. This is northern Taiwan's most stress-free family half-day trip.

  • Tamsui Old Street browsing: ah-gei, fish balls, iron eggs — kids eat happily.
  • Fisherman's Wharf sunset, Lover's Bridge photos.
  • Fort San Domingo and Little White House suit older kids learning about history.

Honestly there are downsides: weekend crowds are huge, strollers are hard to push on the old street. We suggest going after 3 PM, when crowds thin out.

Other Must-Visit Northern Family Attractions

  • Beitou Hot Spring Museum + Thermal Valley: Free attractions (the Hot Spring Museum closes for restoration from 9 November 2026 and is expected to reopen in late October 2027); in winter, watching Thermal Valley steam is super fun for kids.
  • Keelung Marine Science Museum: Rainy day savior. Lots of indoor interactive exhibits — kids can play for hours.
  • Sanxia Old Street + Yingge Ceramics Museum: Don't miss it for hands-on craft families; pottery with kids is great fun.

Cards for three northern Taiwan family attractions: Xpark aquarium, Tamsui Old Street with a sunset pier, and Beitou Hot Spring, each with suitable ages and trip length.

Central Taiwan Family Travel: Where to Go?

Central Taiwan has rich natural ecology and mild climate — comfortable in any season.

Taichung 2-Day Family Itinerary

Taichung is the starting point for central Taiwan family travel. Lots of accommodation options, convenient transport, plus plenty of food and fun.

  • Day 1: Taichung Science Museum (Dinosaur Hall is super popular with kids) → Gaomei Wetland sunset and mud-stepping → Fengjia Night Market
  • Day 2: Rainbow Village photos → Taichung Park boating → Return

The Science Museum and Gaomei Wetland both suit families — educational and fun. Check tide times for Gaomei Wetland; you can only walk down during low tide.

Sun Moon Lake Family Trip: Boat + Cable Car + Lake View Hotel

Sun Moon Lake is a classic for all ages. Kids get excited on the cable car, lakeside trails have easy sections, and lake boat cruises offer refreshing breezes.

Sun Moon Lake Dalage Hotel's lake view rooms open to lake views — therapeutic for adults and kids alike. Can be paired with Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village for even richer experiences.

But honestly, Sun Moon Lake weekends also get crowded. Especially cable car queues. Weekday visits are a completely different experience.

Xitou Day Trip: Nature Education

Xitou Nature Education Area's forest trails are gentle and stroller-friendly. University Pond and Ginkgo Forest are must-photograph spots — great opportunities for kids to connect with nature.

Monster Village has various monster sculptures that kids find both scary and lovable. Though snacks inside are overpriced with average taste.

Can pair with a Taichung 2-day itinerary, or simply as a day trip. More central Taiwan itinerary ideas at 2026 Weekend & Holiday Family Trip Ideas.

Southern Taiwan Family Travel: What's Fun?

Southern Taiwan's sunshine, beaches, and food make it a family travel paradise. Especially when northern Taiwan is cold and wet in winter — one trip south changes everything.

Tainan Crowne Plaza + Anping Old Street

IHG international brand hotel with guaranteed service quality. It is in Tainan's Anping District; the official site says Anping Fort and Anping Old Street are close at hand, and the pool is an indoor heated swimming pool so it works all year.

Near Anping Fort and Anping Old Street, easily paired with a Tainan food tour: shrimp rolls, tofu pudding, beef soup — eat until you're stuffed.

Kenting 3-Day 2-Night Family Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Kenting → Nanwan Beach → Kenting Street
  • Day 2: Marine Biology Museum all day (penguins, ocean tunnel, touch pools — kids love it)
  • Day 3: Eluanbi Lighthouse → Cat Nose Park → Return

Marine Biology Museum sleepover experience is highly recommended but also highly sought-after — typically needs 1-2 months advance booking. Summer is peak season; book accommodation early.

Downside: transportation isn't very convenient. Without a car, getting around Kenting is tough.

Southern Family Farms & Parks

  • Kaohsiung E-Da World: Amusement park + Outlet + hotel — full day of fun.
  • Pingtung Marine Biology Museum: Daytime visit plus sleepover — a child's dream itinerary.
  • Tainan Tsou-Ma-Lai Farm, Wanpi World Safari Zoo: Great places for kids to get close to animals.

Three cards for southern Taiwan family spots, beach, aquarium and amusement park, each with a simple symbol above a short caption: parasol and sand, fish and waves, a Ferris wheel.

Eastern Taiwan Family Travel: Recommended Itineraries

Eastern Taiwan's natural scenery is Taiwan's finest. Magnificent, quiet, slow-paced. If you want to take kids away from city noise, the east is the best choice.

Hualien 3-Day 2-Night Family Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Hualien city → Feast at Dongdamen Night Market
  • Day 2: Taroko trails (take the currently open Dekalun Trail; Shakadang is still closed) → Qixingtan beach
  • Day 3: Farglory Ocean Park all day → Return

Taroko Gorge genuinely leaves kids awestruck — a sense of scale that textbooks and videos cannot replace. One thing to sort out before you go, though. Taroko sustained heavy damage in the 3 April 2024 earthquake. The Shakadang Trail is still listed as closed on the park's own site, and the Swallow Grotto Trail is still listed as closed too. On the official trail list, the one shown as open is the Dekalun Trail (about 300 m of elevation change and many steps, so factor in fitness), while the Lushui Trail is partially open (as far as the small suspension bridge, about 250 m). Check the Taroko National Park website before you set out rather than following an older itinerary.

Note: Taroko trails occasionally have rockfall risks. Check restriction information before departure. Don't go on trails during rainy weather.

Yilan Day Trip: Green Dance Japanese Manor & Jiaoxi Hot Springs

Green Dance International Hotel's Japanese manor is incredibly photogenic. Wearing yukata is popular with families — kids look adorable in them.

Jiaoxi hot spring hotels for soaking and relaxation — top choice for winter family travel. Jimmy Park and Luodong Night Market are also classic Yilan experiences.

Taitung Slow Travel: Teaching Kids to Slow Down

  • Luye Highland: Summer-exclusive hot air balloon festival — kids go wild seeing balloons.
  • Mr. Brown Avenue: Rent bikes for a family ride, photos are gorgeous.
  • Zhiben Hot Spring: Soak and relax, best scheduled for the last day.

Taitung's downside is genuinely inconvenient transportation. Without a car it's very hard to explore; public transport runs infrequently.
