Sun Moon Lake is Taiwan's most iconic lake destination. But bringing kids, you can't just "look at the scenery" and call it a day.

The good news is that Sun Moon Lake offers cycling around the lake, cable car rides with lake views, and touring Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village — two days and one night is perfect for hitting all the highlights. This article organizes transportation, itinerary, accommodation, and costs for you, making Sun Moon Lake easy even with kids.

TL;DR: Best Sun Moon Lake 2-day plan: Day 1 lakeside cycling + cable car + Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, Day 2 Wenwu Temple + Puli town. Lock in the room as soon as your dates are set. Autumn (September-November) is the best travel season.

How to Prepare for a Sun Moon Lake 2-Day Trip?

Preparation focuses on transportation, accommodation booking, and itinerary routing. 2025 domestic tourism reached 247.61 million trips — an all-time high, with overnight travelers averaging NT$5,714 in spending (Tourism Administration, MOTC — 2025 Survey of Travel by R.O.C. Citizens, 2026). Taiwanese average 11.65 trips per year (Tourism Administration, MOTC — 2025 Survey of Travel by R.O.C. Citizens, 2026). 34% of travelers plan family trips, with 65% budgeting under NT$8,114 per night (Tromnimedia, 2024).

Transportation: Self-Driving vs. Taiwan Tourist Shuttle

Self-driving: Taking National Highway 6 from Taichung is the most convenient option. Parking info: both Shuishe Pier and Xiangshan Visitor Center have parking lots. On weekends, arrive before 9 AM or spots will be hard to find.

Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Sun Moon Lake Line: Departing from Taichung Gancheng Station or HSR Taichung Station, round-trip ticket around NT$360. Once at Sun Moon Lake, you can take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Sun Moon Lake Round-the-Lake Line to the attractions (about one hour for the full route, hop on and off freely), but self-driving offers more flexibility.

With kids, we recommend driving. Strollers, car seats, and supplies can all stay in the car — much more mobile.

Best Travel Season and Weather

Autumn (September-November) is the best season. Cool weather, low rainfall, crisp air — cycling around the lake is incredibly comfortable.

Spring (March-April) has cherry blossoms and fireflies — also highly recommended. Summer: watch for afternoon thundershowers — schedule outdoors for morning, indoors for afternoon. Winter has beautiful morning mist but temperatures can drop below 10 degrees — keep kids warm.

How to Plan Day 1? Half-Day Lakeside + Cable Car Experience

Xiangshan Visitor Center → Lakeside Cycling Path

Xiangshan Visitor Center's architecture is beautiful in itself. Our first visit, we spent 20 minutes just taking photos. The exposed concrete design is an Instagram hotspot — worth visiting even without cycling.

The Sun Moon Lake round-the-lake cycling path (about 30 km) was once voted one of the world's 10 most beautiful cycling paths by CNNGO, CNN's travel website, and the Xiangshan-to-Shuishe section is one stretch of it. Lake and mountain scenery throughout — puts you in a great mood.

With kids, we recommend renting tandem family bikes. Kids sit in front, adults pedal in back — the whole family rides together. This section is about 3.4 km in total, with multiple rest stops for photos and water breaks.

Plenty of rental shops available on weekends — no worries about availability; rental prices are as posted on-site at each shop.

Sun Moon Lake Cable Car → Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village

Take the cable car in the afternoon. The Sun Moon Lake Cable Car connects Sun Moon Lake to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, spanning 1.87 km with a 7-minute ride. The aerial view of Sun Moon Lake is spectacular — kids will be mesmerized. Check the hours first: 10:30-16:00 on weekdays, 10:00-16:30 on weekends and holidays, and the ropeway closes for maintenance on the first Wednesday of every month (with extra closures announced for annual servicing). Confirm on the official site before planning an afternoon around it.

At Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, there are indigenous cultural exhibits and amusement rides. Kids can watch indigenous song and dance performances (such as the Paiwan traditional wedding parade and the farewell show). For rides, the Shuishalian mini train suits toddlers, while older kids can try the pirate ship.

Every Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village admission ticket includes same-day rides on the Sun Moon Lake Cable Car (except on cable car maintenance days), so there's no need to buy a separate cable car ticket. We suggest taking the cable car first, then touring the Village — fewer crowds in the afternoon.

A jade lake ringed by mountains fills the lower left, a red cable car station on its shore; four cabins climb over the ridge to a hilltop culture park with totems and rides.

Evening: Shuishe Pier Stroll + Dinner

Shuishe Pier's evening lake view with sunset is very therapeutic. Walk along the lakeside with kids, or take a boat ride around the lake during the pier's opening hours (Shuishe Pier: 07:00-18:00 in the summer season, 08:00-17:00 in the winter season).

Several restaurants and street food options near the pier. Try the Thao indigenous cuisine — bamboo tube rice and wild boar are specialties. Head back to the hotel when tired, take a bath, and get the kids to bed early.

Where to Stay at Sun Moon Lake? Dalage Hotel Recommendation

Lake View Room Unboxing: Sun Moon Lake Right Outside Your Window

Dalage Hotel is located in the Shuishe commercial district of Sun Moon Lake, with the lakeshore right behind the hotel and Shuishe Pier about 50 meters away on foot — unbeatable location.

The lake view room is the biggest selling point. Open the curtains and it's Sun Moon Lake — not a distant glimpse of water, but lake filling your entire window. Waking to morning mist swirling over the lake surface — that scene alone is worth the room rate.

Room space isn't huge, but adequate for families with kids. For a family of four, book a quad room type directly (such as the Shuiyang Room or the Stargazing Loft); Del Lago's room types are occupancy-based and cannot take extra guests or extra beds.

Family Facilities and Services

Whether cribs, children's amenities and children's meals are available is best confirmed with the hotel when booking.

Honestly, Dalage isn't the type of family hotel with lavish playrooms. Its selling points are lake views and location, not children's facilities. If your kids need a playroom to be satisfied, you might want to consider other options. But if you prioritize scenery and convenience, this is one of Sun Moon Lake's best choices.

Where to Go on Day 2? Wenwu Temple + Puli Town Tour

Wenwu Temple → Xuanzang Temple → Ci'en Pagoda

Wenwu Temple is Sun Moon Lake's most famous temple — even kids find the majestic architecture impressive. The panoramic lake view from the temple's observation platform is a must-photograph angle.

Ci'en Pagoda requires climbing stairs (about 700-meter trail + tower stairs), but reaching the top offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Sun Moon Lake — the best viewpoint. Kids 5+ can attempt it; carry them if they can't walk. Strollers aren't practical for the climb — skip it with babies.

The three attractions are close by car — one morning covers them all.

Puli Winery → 18 Degrees C Chocolate Workshop

Puli Winery is free admission. Adults can sample Shaoxing wine; kids' highlight is the wine-infused popsicles and egg rolls — our kids insist on two every visit.

You can also stop by 18 Degrees C Chocolate Workshop along the way. Have lunch in Puli city center.

Return Trip Suggestions

From Puli, take National Highway 6 back to Taichung, then connect to Highway 1 or 3. If not in a rush, detour to Caotun's Taiwan Craft Cultural Park.

We recommend leaving by 3 PM to avoid evening highway congestion.

Leaving Sun Moon Lake at dusk: golden water, a cable-car line behind, a family loading an SUV as a child waves back, and three bars comparing traffic by departure time.

How Much Does a Sun Moon Lake 2-Day Trip Cost?

Detailed budget for a family of four (two adults, two children):

Accommodation is where the budget varies most — it depends mainly on room type and check-in date. Sun Moon Lake lake view hotels aren't cheap, so if your dates are still flexible, compare a few before deciding; a family of four is more comfortable in a quad room than a double with an extra bed.
