0-3 years: Choose spots within a 30-minute drive, schedule 1-2 stops per day, definitely include nap time. Kids this age are happy anywhere — the focus is keeping adults relaxed.

3-6 years: Can handle 2-3 stops, but stay at least 1 hour per spot. Don't rush between stops — letting kids fully explore matters more than checking boxes.

6+ years: Enough stamina for a full day, but remember to bring snacks and water to prevent low blood sugar meltdowns.

Day trip pacing suggestion: Leave at 9-10 AM, morning attraction, lunch, afternoon attraction, home by 4-5 PM. Don't get back too late — kids melting down from exhaustion in the car means misery for adults too.

Route 1: Zoo + Maokong Gondola

Taipei Zoo is the classic of classics for northern Taiwan family day trips. Official admission is NT$100 standard, NT$60 for registered Taipei residents, NT$50 concession and NT$70 group, free for children under 6; the park shuttle train is NT$5 and the Education Centre NT$20 (Taipei Zoo ticket information). The NT$60 you often see quoted online is the Taipei-resident rate, not the general price.

Recommend hitting the zoo in the morning, focusing on the Penguin Hall and Panda Hall (these two areas are most crowded — go early to skip lines). The park is huge; with kids, 2-3 hours is about right — no need to see everything.

In the afternoon, take the Maokong Gondola up the mountain. Current fares are NT$180 one way and NT$300 for a day pass, with crystal cabins (glass floor) costing NT$50 extra per ride (Maokong Gondola fares). Brave kids love the crystal cabin; the height-averse can take a regular one. At Maokong, find a tea house to sit and rest — adults drink tea while kids enjoy snacks.

Top rainy-day backup. The National Taiwan Science Education Center's interactive exhibits can keep kids busy all day.

The permanent exhibitions are on floors 3 to 6, with plenty of hands-on interactive installations where kids can learn while they play.

After the Science Education Center around 3-4 PM, walk to Shilin Night Market for dinner — perfect day trip pacing. One perk of night markets with kids: they want to try everything, so adults get to sample lots of different foods too.

Transport: Walking from the MRT station is a long way with small children, so the museum's own site suggests transferring at MRT Shilin Station Exit 1 to bus Red 30, Red 12 or 557, or at Jiantan Station to buses such as Red 30 or 41, to the "National Science Education Center" stop. Note: The Science Education Center's permanent exhibitions require a ticket; children aged 6 and under are free.

Route 3: Dadaocheng Cultural Walk + Dihua Street Family Crafts

For families who enjoy cultural experiences. Very relaxed pace — eat, walk, and browse.

Dadaocheng Wharf offers river views and cycling. Dihua Street has several family craft workshops — making soap, pastries — kids get hands-on, educational fun. Finished pieces can be taken home as souvenirs.

Honestly though, this route suits kids 5 and older. Younger children don't connect with cultural experiences and get bored easily.

Transport: Walk from MRT Daqiaotou or Beimen Station.

Route 4: Yingge Ceramics Museum + DIY Experience

Yingge Ceramics Museum has an outdoor water plaza where kids will happily spend a summer afternoon. The ceramics art park, water plaza included, is free — just bring a change of clothes. The museum galleries themselves are NT$80, free for New Taipei residents and students.

Indoor exhibits are also worth seeing. DIY ceramic workshops should be reserved in advance. Kids hand-shape and paint their own ceramics to take home — wonderful family memories.

Yingge Old Street nearby is worth a stroll, with handmade ceramic goods perfect for souvenirs.

Transport: Train to Yingge Station, 10-minute walk. Reminder: Bring extra clothes and sunscreen for the summer water plaza.

Route 5: Shifen Old Street Sky Lanterns + Houtong Cat Village

Shifen Waterfall plus sky lantern releasing is a classic family combination. Kids can draw and write wishes on sky lanterns — watching them float into the sky is genuinely moving.

From Shifen, take the Pingxi Line toward Ruifang and you reach Houtong Cat Village after passing Dahua and Sandiaoling. Cat-loving kids will scream with joy — friendly cats everywhere. But teach kids to be gentle with the cats — no forceful holding or chasing.

The downside is heavy weekend crowds. Shifen Old Street on weekends is packed, sky lantern releasing requires queuing, and the experience suffers. Schedule weekdays if possible.

Transport: Train to Shifen and Houtong Stations — very convenient.

Route 6: Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf Half-Day Trip

A lazy afternoon route. No need to wake up early.

Tamsui Old Street for ah-gei and iron eggs, then ferry to Fisherman's Wharf to watch the sunset. Fisherman's Wharf has Lover's Bridge and boardwalks — stroller-friendly. Evening sunset against the river makes for gorgeous photos.

This route has a very slow pace — perfect for taking a young baby out for some fresh air. Nothing to rush — go wherever feels right.

Transport: MRT to Tamsui Station, walk to Old Street, then ferry to Fisherman's Wharf.

How to Plan Taoyuan Family Day Trips? 2 Popular Routes

Route 7: Xpark Aquarium + Gloria Outlets

Xpark is one of northern Taiwan's hottest family attractions. The jellyfish zone light show and close-up penguin viewing have kids screaming.

Gloria Outlets is right next to Xpark — eat and shop after the aquarium with a seamless flow. The food court has tons of options, so no stress finding a restaurant with kids.

Buy advance tickets to avoid on-site queuing. Weekdays have far fewer people for a better experience. If weekends are unavoidable, enter after 3 PM when crowds thin out.

Transport: About a 9-minute walk from HSR Taoyuan Station. Taking HSR is super convenient — no car needed.

Route 8: Daxi Old Street + Blooming Farm

Daxi Old Street has traditional snacks like dried tofu and rice bowls, plus Baroque architecture perfect for photos.

Huakaile Leisure Farm has small animals and a sandpit — good for burning off preschooler energy. For admission, opening hours and the fees for each ride, go by the farm's on-site notices.

However, Blooming Farm isn't huge — about 1-1.5 hours covers it. Older kids might want more — consider adding Daxi Riverside Park cycling.

Transport: Self-driving recommended. Daxi Old Street has public parking — arrive early on weekends.

Hsinchu Family Day Trips? 2 Local Routes

Route 9: Hsinchu Zoo + Nanliao Fishing Port

The renovated Hsinchu Zoo is beautiful. Admission is only NT$50 — incredible value. The park now features many up-close animal viewing spots, much more fun than before.

Nanliao Fishing Port offers cycling and kite flying — the sea breeze feels wonderful. The two spots are about 20 minutes apart — morning at the zoo, afternoon at the port, perfect pacing.

The only caveat is Hsinchu's wind. Winter wind at Nanliao is truly strong — dress kids in an extra layer. Summer, however, is very pleasant.

Transport: Driving is more convenient. Can also take the train to Hsinchu Station then bus to the zoo.

Route 10: Neiwan Old Street (Lavender Cottage's Jianshi Branch Has Closed)

Neiwan Old Street has the Liu Xingqin Comic Museum and various Hakka snacks, full of nostalgic atmosphere. Flat rice noodles and wild ginger flower rice dumplings are must-eats.

Note that Lavender Cottage in Jianshi, Hsinchu closed for good on 30 September 2025, so don't include it when planning a Neiwan trip.

Best to visit in autumn-winter when the cool weather makes walking comfortable. In summer, Neiwan Old Street gets stuffy.

Transport: Self-driving recommended. Neiwan is also accessible via the Neiwan Branch Line train — a fun experience in itself.
