How Are Taiwan's Hot Spring Hotels Divided by Region? Overview
Taiwan has 128 hot spring areas showing geothermal activity (Tourism Administration, 2025), distributed from north to south, lowlands to highlands, each region with a completely different character. In the whole of 2025, hotel guest stays reached 82.09 million, with domestic stays up 20% from pre-pandemic levels (Tourism Administration Statistics, 2025) — hot spring accommodation is a major growth driver for domestic tourism.
Northern hot springs win on transportation convenience — MRT and highways provide quick access. Central hot springs are tucked in mountains — enjoy forest bathing while soaking. Southern hot springs each have their own character, especially Guanziling, a mud spring that is rare in Taiwan. Eastern hot springs offer healing experiences wrapped in nature.
For comprehensive Taiwan hot spring hotel recommendations, see our Taiwan Hot Spring Hotel Complete Guide. This article focuses on regional picks so you can quickly decide based on your starting point.
Best Northern Hot Spring Hotels? 3-5 Curated Picks
Northern Taiwan hot springs' biggest advantage is convenience. From Taipei, you can be soaking within an hour — even spontaneous after-work soaks are doable.
Beitou Hot Spring — MRT-Accessible Urban Hot Springs
Take the MRT to Xinbeitou Station and step out into hot spring street. This kind of convenience is rare among hot spring areas worldwide. Beitou features both white sulfur and green sulfur springs.
Recommended hotels:
- Beitou Spring City Resort: Open-air bath with garden landscaping, white sulfur spring with green views, double rooms from the official list price of NT$7,200 + 10% service charge (Elegant Double Room)
- Asia Pacific Hotel Beitou: Complete family facilities; the official site lists an indoor swimming pool and a VR gaming zone
Beitou Hot Spring Bathhouse Picks: Couples' Private Bathhouse Selection
Just want to soak without staying overnight? Beitou's private double bathhouses are a classic date choice.
| Bathhouse Type | Price Range | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public bathhouse | See on-site notice | Unlimited | Solo relaxation |
| Mid-range bathhouse | See on-site notice | 90 minutes | Couple dates |
| Premium bathhouse | See on-site notice | 120 minutes | Special occasions |
A reminder: Beitou bathhouses on weekends are often fully booked — weekday visits or advance reservations are recommended.
Jiaoxi Hot Spring — Right Off the Highway, Hot Spring Paradise
Jiaoxi is Taiwan's most popular hot spring area. Its sodium bicarbonate spring is called "beauty spring" — skin genuinely feels smoother after soaking. Just 5 minutes off the Jiaoxi interchange on National Freeway 5 to hot spring street — incredibly convenient for drivers.
Our team actually stayed at five Jiaoxi hot spring hotels in late 2025. After comprehensive evaluation, Evergreen Resort Hotel Jiaosi delivered the best overall experience. The open-air hot spring pools have different water temperatures for leisurely soaking, the buffet's seafood station exceeded expectations, and the multi-purpose entertainment room kept kids thoroughly entertained.
The only downside is weekends are truly crowded. Check-in lines and fuller open-air pools. Our advice: go on weekdays if at all possible.
Evergreen Resort Hotel Jiaosi Value Plan
Hot spring hotels can be had at a discounted price too. Cool Price Travel has value plans for Evergreen Resort Jiaosi, including open-air hot springs and full access to children's facilities.

Wulai Hot Spring — Indigenous Culture with Sodium Bicarbonate Springs
Wulai is a very special place. Atayal indigenous culture, gentle sodium bicarbonate spring water, and a mini train ride to the waterfall — the entire experience is completely different from Beitou and Jiaoxi. Great for travelers who want to avoid tourist crowds and appreciate indigenous culture.
The downside is slightly inconvenient transportation — requires driving or transferring to a bus, with occasional winter road restrictions due to weather.

Central Taiwan Hot Spring Hotel Picks — 3-5 Selections
Central hot springs share a common feature: mountain scenery. Soaking surrounded by mountains is on a completely different level from urban hot springs.
Guguan Hot Spring — Mountain Forest Retreat at the Cross-Island Highway Entrance
Guguan's sodium bicarbonate spring is colorless and odorless — skin feels silky smooth after soaking. The hot spring area is at the entrance to the Cross-Island Highway, flanked by spectacular valleys and streams. Soaking while listening to rushing stream water — the healing effect is off the charts.
We actually drove from Taichung city to Guguan — about 1.5 hours of mountain roads. Plenty of curves along the way, but upon arrival, the sight of valley scenery with hot spring steam made the journey worthwhile.
Recommended hotels:
- Uni Resort Guguan: Large resort with comprehensive facilities — outdoor hot spring pools and SPA are highlights
- Dragon Valley Hotel: Established hot spring inn, the open-air valley tub is the main draw; the official 2025 reference rate sheet lists weekday promotional rates from NT$2,300 — quite affordable
However, Guguan requires 1.5 hours of mountain driving, with occasional poor road conditions in winter. Evaluate first if traveling with elderly or car-sick family members.
Taichung Nikko Hot Spring — Great Soaking Without Mountain Roads
Don't want mountain roads? Taichung Nikko Hot Spring is beside Dakeng Scenic Area — just 20 minutes from downtown Taichung. Modern facilities, convenient transportation — an easy weekend soaking option for city dwellers.
For the current family facilities and bathing packages, it's best to call the hotel directly before you go. The gentle sodium bicarbonate spring suits the whole family. The downside compared to Guguan is lacking the mountain-forest atmosphere.
Lushan Hot Spring — The Area Has Been Decommissioned; Don't Plan Around It
To be clear about this area: the Lushan hot spring zone has been formally decommissioned and sits in geologically unsafe terrain. The county government is relocating operators to the Fuxing hot spring zone in Puli, and the few operators that have yet to relocate — some even operating illegally — will have to exit under the law if they cannot comply; officials have also publicly urged people not to enter the closed area for sightseeing or photos (UDN, 2026).
Monitoring data shows shallow slippage beginning once cumulative rainfall reaches 300 mm, and significant deep-seated movement above 800 mm. So this is not a "some facilities are being rebuilt, check before you go" situation — the whole area is not recommended.
For a soak near Cingjing, head toward Guguan or Puli instead and confirm the operator holds a hot spring mark before booking.
Southern Taiwan Hot Spring Hotel Picks — 3-5 Selections
Southern hot springs have two major advantages: unique spring types and affordable prices. Plus far fewer crowds than the north, making for more comfortable soaking.
Sichongxi Hot Spring — Pingtung's Carbonate Spring
Sichongxi is one of Taiwan's four major hot springs. The gentle carbonate spring water at about 50-80°C is safe for elderly and children alike.
Each winter, the Sichongxi Hot Spring Festival (the 2025–2026 edition ran from 21 November to 1 March) lines the entire hot spring street with romantic light displays — nighttime strolls and photos are absolutely stunning. This is the best time to visit.
Accommodation picks:
- Shimizu Japanese-Style Hot Spring House: Japanese-style hot spring inn with great atmosphere; rates per the official site's live pricing
- Fennel Love Hot Spring Resort: Affordable, clean facilities, great for budget travelers
Guanziling Hot Spring — A Mud Spring Rare in Taiwan
This one deserves special attention. Guanziling is ranked with Beitou, Yangmingshan and Sichongxi as one of Taiwan's four major hot springs, and its mud spring is rare in Taiwan. The gray mud spring is rich in minerals — after soaking, it's like applying a natural mud mask, leaving skin incredibly smooth.
Our experience soaking in Guanziling's mud spring: the texture is truly unique — a slippery mud sensation wrapping the skin. After rinsing, skin was noticeably smoother. However, the mud spring will stain light-colored swimwear — wear dark colors.
Nearby, "Fire and Water Spring" (water and fire emerging from the same spot) is a must-visit natural phenomenon — quite remarkable.
Baolai Bulao Hot Spring — Kaohsiung's Hidden Wild Stream Hot Springs
Baolai Bulao Hot Spring in Kaohsiung's Liugui District is on every wild stream hot spring enthusiast's list. Sodium bicarbonate springs paired with valley scenery — soaking while listening to streams flow past is nature's ASMR. Great for travelers who enjoy outdoor adventure and don't mind a short hike.
However, wild stream hot spring safety needs attention — visits are not recommended during rainy season or after typhoons when water levels rise.

Eastern Taiwan Hot Spring Hotel Picks — 3-5 Selections
Eastern hot springs sell nature. Whether it's Zhiben's forests or Ruisui's pastoral scenery, the views while soaking are the best part.
Zhiben Hot Spring — Taitung Forest-Style Hot Springs
What type of spring is Zhiben? Sodium bicarbonate — clear, colorless, and odorless, gentle and non-irritating. Nearby attractions include Zhiben Forest Recreation Area and White Jade Waterfall — perfect for a 3-day, 2-night in-depth trip.
Recommended hotels:
- Hotel Royal Chihpen (closed for renovation since 1 March 2026; the official site now offers post-renovation room packages for stays from 1 September 2026): Five-star resort hotel, open-air hot spring pools surrounded by mountains — truly feels like a vacation
- Toyugi Hot Spring Resort: Diverse facilities, including a wellness hot spring public pool and a semicircular swimming pool (closed November–March each year)
We flew from Taipei to Taitung then transferred to Zhiben — took most of the day. But stepping into Hotel Royal Chihpen's open-air hot spring area, surrounded by mountain forest on all sides, every bit of travel fatigue was instantly worthwhile.
Zhiben's downside is the distance — flying from Taipei to Taitung plus transfer takes about half a day. But once you arrive, you'll agree the journey was worth it.
Ruisui Hot Spring — Hualien's Hidden Carbonate Spring Gem
Ruisui's most distinctive feature is its spring type — Ruisui has two: a sodium bicarbonate spring and an iron-bearing carbonate spring, which turns golden as it oxidizes and is known as the "golden spring." Rich in iron and minerals, the nourishing sensation after soaking is completely different from other hot springs.
Public bath and private double bathhouse prices are set by each operator — check their posted rates. Paired with a Ruisui Ranch day trip — hot springs plus cow feeding plus fresh milk — it's a classic Hualien local weekend itinerary.

Beyond Jiaoxi: Yilan's Jioujhih Hot Spring
Many people don't know that besides Jiaoxi, Yilan also has Jioujhih Hot Spring on Taipingshan. Located inside a National Forest Recreation Area, you can soak and cook eggs in the hot spring — kids love it. However, mountain temperatures are low in winter — bundle up after soaking.
