2026 Central and Southern Taiwan Family Day Trip Spots | Local Routes in Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung

Central and southern Taiwan enjoy warm weather and diverse attractions — from museums to beaches. But traveling with kids is a completely different experience from going as adults.

If you live in central or southern Taiwan, or want to take the kids on a weekend adventure, this article covers 7 routes across Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. These are tried-and-true local favorites — not those Instagram-pretty spots that turn into nightmares with kids.

TL;DR: Top central-southern family day trips: Taichung National Museum of Natural Science + Caowu Avenue (indoor, beat the heat), Tainan Chimei Museum (closed Wednesdays) + Ten Drum (cultural experience), Kaohsiung Shoushan Zoo + Cijin Ferry (ocean views and animals in one trip). Autumn-winter is the most comfortable season; summer should focus on indoor attractions.

What to Check Before a Central-Southern Family Day Trip

Confirm attraction opening hours, parking availability, and indoor backup plans before departure. In 2025, 79.1% of domestic trips were same-day light travel, with average spending of NT$2,279 per person per trip (Tourism Administration, MOTC — 2025 Survey of Travel by R.O.C. Citizens, 2026). The average person took 11.65 trips per year, totaling 247.61 million trips — a record high (Tourism Administration, MOTC — 2025 Survey of Travel by R.O.C. Citizens, 2026). 34% of travelers plan family trips (Tromnimedia, 2024).

Season and Weather Considerations

Central and southern Taiwan summers are genuinely scorching. Taking kids outdoors in July and August, you'll be drenched in sweat within half an hour. No exaggeration.

So in summer, plan primarily indoor attractions — museums, theme parks, tourist factories — blast the AC and keep kids from heatstroke. Save outdoor itineraries for evening.

Autumn-winter (October-February) is the most comfortable travel season — gentle sunlight, perfect for loading up the outdoor itinerary. That's why many northerners love heading south in winter.

Also watch out for afternoon thunderstorms in the south, especially in summer. Have an indoor backup plan for afternoon activities. Getting caught in the rain with kids and catching a cold isn't fun.

Driving vs. HSR + Rental

Self-driving is most convenient for central-southern day trips. Attractions are spread out, bus schedules are infrequent and unreliable, and waiting for buses with kids is a nightmare.

Coming from the north, taking HSR to Taichung/Tainan/Kaohsiung then renting a car is a good option.

Within Tainan and Kaohsiung city centers, buses work (Kaohsiung also has a light rail line), but honestly, self-driving is easier with a stroller.

Taichung Family Day Trip: 3 Recommended Routes

Route 1: National Museum of Natural Science + Caowu Avenue + Shen Ji New Village

The National Museum of Natural Science is Taichung's #1 family attraction. We've taken kids three times and found something new each visit. The space theater's dome films amaze kids, and the dinosaur hall's massive fossil models are a must-see. Exhibition hall tickets are NT$120 for adults, free for children under 6.

After the museum, stroll down Caowu Avenue. This tree-lined boulevard is perfect for walking with kids, with street performers and creative markets along the way. At the end is Shen Ji New Village, full of specialty shops and desserts.

The entire route is in the city center — convenient transportation and easy parking. There's a paid parking lot next to the museum; on weekends, arriving before 10 AM usually guarantees a spot.

The museum gets very crowded on weekends though, with packed exhibition halls. Weekday visits are a much better experience — but not Monday: the museum is closed Mondays (it opens as normal when a Monday is a public holiday or a substitute holiday).

Route 2: Houli Horse Ranch + Lihpao Land

Lihpao Land has dual water and land parks. Kids go wild at the water park in summer, and the land park is exciting in winter. Older kids have many rides to enjoy — enough for a full day without getting bored.

Houli Horse Ranch admission is NT$150 full price and NT$100 concession; check the official announcements for opening hours and closing days. The ranch offers horse rides led around the ring by an instructor — confirm fees and age limits on site. The expression on our kid's face while riding — still talked about today.

Lihpao Outlet Mall is right next to it — dining and shopping all in one stop, no restaurant hunting needed.

Transportation: Self-driving recommended. Lihpao has parking (cars are charged by the hour).

Route 3: Xinshe Lavender Cottage + Dakeng Trails

Lavender Cottage has beautiful grounds with craft experiences such as sachet DIY — photos look great from any angle. Entry to the Xinshe site is NT$200, which includes a welcome gift worth over NT$200; open 10:30-18:30 on weekdays and 10:00-18:30 at weekends.

Dakeng trails vary in difficulty. With kids, stick to trails #9 or #10 — gentle slopes with boardwalks that aren't tiring. Morning trail hiking for fresh air, afternoon at the cottage — a mix of active and relaxed.

This route is in the mountains with infrequent bus service — driving is essential. Trails get slippery in rain, so not recommended with kids on wet days.

Three panels of Taichung family trips: a dinosaur skeleton in an exhibition hall, a park with a Ferris wheel and coaster, and a hillside lavender field with boardwalks.

Tainan Family Day Trip: 2 Classic Routes

Route 4: Chimei Museum + Ten Drum Cultural Village

Chimei Museum's exterior is as grand as a European palace. The front lawn alone can keep kids running for half an hour. Check the closing day first: Chimei closes on Wednesdays, not the Monday most people assume.

The animal specimen gallery is the biggest hit with kids — lifelike animals of all kinds, captivating even for preschoolers. The instrument gallery lets you hear various classical instruments — education through entertainment.

Ten Drum Cultural Village works well for the afternoon. Park admission includes one drum performance, and the park also has a family zipline and other activities that burn major energy — guaranteed instant bedtime that night.

The two attractions aren't far apart — perfect for the same day.

Route 5: Anping Fort + Anping Tree House + Yuguang Island

Anping Fort is a Tainan must-visit. Kids can climb the walls, see the cannons, and play little explorer. The official rate is NT$70 full price and NT$35 concession, and Tainan residents enter free with ID; open 08:30-17:30.

Anping Tree House, engulfed by old banyan trees, has a unique atmosphere. Kids walking along the root-wrapped walkways feel like they're on a jungle adventure. Some areas are rather dark though — very young children might be frightened.

Yuguang Island has a small stretch of beach — perfect for an evening of sand-stepping and sunset-watching with kids. Then walk and eat along Anping Old Street — shrimp crackers, tofu pudding, dried fruit — kids love it.

Kaohsiung with Kids: 2 Family Routes

Route 6: Shoushan Zoo + Cijin Ferry

Shoushan Zoo's renovation features an open design with skybridge observation areas for up-close animal viewing — completely different from the old iron-bar setup. Kids get incredibly excited seeing animals at arm's length. Full ticket just NT$40, NT$20 for ages 6-17 and free under 6 — incredibly affordable. Note it closes on Mondays (open when a Monday falls on a public holiday; closed on Lunar New Year's Eve), 09:00-17:00 with last entry at 16:30, no booking needed.

After the zoo, take the ferry to Cijin. The ferry ride itself is an experience — kids are always thrilled on their first boat ride. In Cijin: bike riding, seafood, and beach time for a fulfilling day.

You can bring bikes on the ferry, or rent in Cijin.

Transportation: MRT to Sizihwan Station, then walk to Gushan Ferry Terminal. Completely doable without a car.

Route 7: E-Da World Full Day

E-Da World is a popular theme park in southern Taiwan with rides for all ages — from carousels to roller coasters.

Our experience: Enter right at opening, rush to popular rides first, take lunch when noon crowds are heaviest, then hit remaining rides in the afternoon. This way you can enjoy 8-10 rides in a day.

E-Da Outlet is within the park grounds — dining and shopping are convenient. No need to find outside restaurants.

However, E-Da tickets aren't cheap: the official rate is NT$1,080 full price (NT$680 for schoolchildren, NT$520 concession, free under age 3 or under 90 cm), with an afternoon ticket from 13:30 at NT$750. Going for just half a day feels wasteful — plan for a full day. Kids who are too small have limited ride options, so it's better value to wait until they're a bit older.

Transportation: Self-driving recommended, or take the E-Da bus from HSR Zuoying Station.
